Company Context
Lighthouse Hospitality is a hospitality design consultancy that specializes in creating tailored dining experiences for restaurants and hospitality brands. Their work combines design, product curation, and operational understanding—spanning tableware, glassware, furniture, lighting, and overall experience development.
Rather than offering standalone products, the company focuses on delivering cohesive, site-specific concepts that align with each client’s brand and environment. Working closely with hospitality clients, Lighthouse Hospitality positions itself around crafting immersive, experience-driven spaces that balance aesthetics with practical execution.
My Role & Responsibilities
As the sole UI/UX designer, I led the end-to-end design of the Lighthouse Hospitality website, translating a loosely defined brief into a structured and visually cohesive digital experience. Starting from an initial sitemap and rough references, I developed the overall experience from low-fidelity layouts to high-fidelity UI.
Key responsibilities:
-
Defined the information architecture based on the provided sitemap and business needs
-
Created wireframes to establish layout, structure, and content hierarchy
-
Designed high-fidelity UI aligned with the brand’s premium and design-led positioning
-
Iterated on designs through feedback with the founder and stakeholder
-
Translated abstract brand direction into a cohesive visual and interaction system
-
Delivered final designs in Figma for handoff to the marketing team for WordPress implementation
Project Overview
Lighthouse Hospitality did not have an existing online presence, making it difficult to showcase their work or attract new clients. While the company delivered highly tailored hospitality experiences, there was no centralized platform to communicate their capabilities, present past projects, or guide potential clients toward engagement.
The project focused on designing a website from scratch that could clearly position the brand, showcase its portfolio, and support client acquisition. In addition to presenting services, the experience needed to incorporate storytelling through editorial content (Stories) to build credibility and communicate the depth behind each project, while introducing a clear path for potential clients to inquire and connect.
The Problem
Lighthouse Hospitality needed a website to establish an online presence and showcase their work, but the project started with limited structure and minimal content. While there was a general direction around pages and past projects, there was no clear framework for how information should be organized or communicated to potential clients.
This created several challenges. The absence of defined messaging made it difficult to articulate the company’s value, while the lack of structured content limited how projects and services could be presented. At the same time, the website needed to reflect a premium, design-led brand and support client inquiries—all within a tight timeline and with consideration for WordPress implementation constraints.
Design Goals
To address the lack of structure and clarity, the design focused on translating a loosely defined brief into a clear and cohesive website experience. The goal was to organize content into intuitive sections, reduce ambiguity, and establish a logical structure that makes the company’s offerings easy to understand and navigate.
Establish Clear Structure & Messaging
A key priority was defining a clear information architecture that could organize content across pages in a logical and intuitive way. With limited initial direction, the design focused on turning vague inputs into structured communication—making it easier for users to understand what the company does and how it delivers value.
Strengthen Portfolio Presentation
The website needed to showcase projects in a way that reflects the quality and detail of Lighthouse Hospitality’s work. This involved structuring projects for easy browsing, improving how visual content is presented, and introducing storytelling elements to provide context and depth for each project.
Balance Power with Clarity
Another goal was to establish a strong visual identity that reflects the brand’s premium and design-led positioning. The design emphasized minimal, refined layouts and consistent visual language to create a cohesive experience across all pages.
Support Conversion & Credibility
Beyond presentation, the website needed to support business outcomes by guiding users toward inquiry. This included introducing a clear contact pathway and using content—such as the Stories section—to build credibility and communicate the thinking behind the work.
Design for Practical Constraints
The design also needed to account for real-world constraints, including limited content, a tight timeline, and WordPress implementation. Layouts were designed to be flexible and scalable, ensuring they could adapt as content evolves while remaining feasible to build.
Design Process
Designing the website required structuring a clear and cohesive experience from a loosely defined brief. Rather than focusing on individual pages, the process centered on organizing content, defining hierarchy, and ensuring that each part of the website connects naturally to support both storytelling and conversion.
Structuring the Experience
Mapping the end-to-end NFT creation journey revealed that friction was not in individual steps, but in the transitions between them. Creators were forced to switch tools to complete related tasks, which became the primary source of complexity.
Defining Layout & Content Through Wireframes
Wireframing was used to explore layout directions, establish content hierarchy, and align with stakeholders on structure before moving into visual design. With limited initial content, the focus was on creating flexible layouts that could adapt as content evolved, while maintaining clarity in navigation and information flow.
Translating Brand into Visual Direction
The visual design was guided by the goal of creating a premium, design-led experience. Large, full-width imagery was used to highlight the quality of work, supported by generous spacing and a minimal color palette to maintain a refined and elegant feel. Strong typography and consistent layout patterns reinforced a cohesive visual identity across pages.
Designing for Portfolio & Storytelling
Projects were structured to move beyond simple presentation, introducing a more narrative-driven approach to how work is showcased. Project detail pages were designed to guide users through each project with a clear storytelling flow, while visual content was prioritized to reflect the design-focused nature of the brand.
Balancing UX with Business Goals
The experience was designed to guide users from browsing to understanding and ultimately taking action. Layout decisions emphasized clarity and flow, ensuring that users can easily navigate between sections while being naturally led toward inquiry. Contact pathways were kept simple and accessible to reduce friction and support conversion.
Designing Within Constraints
The design process also accounted for real-world constraints, including limited content, a tight timeline, and WordPress implementation. Layouts were kept structured and modular to ensure they could be built efficiently while remaining scalable for future updates.
The Solution
The website was designed as a cohesive digital experience that translates Lighthouse Hospitality’s work into a structured and visually engaging format. Rather than treating pages as standalone sections, the solution focuses on guiding users through a clear journey—from first impression to project exploration, storytelling, and ultimately client inquiry.
Each part of the website was intentionally designed to balance visual impact with clarity. By combining strong imagery, minimal layouts, and structured content, the experience highlights the quality of work while making it easy for users to understand the brand, explore projects, and take action.
Landing & First Impression
Establishing Brand Presence and Guiding Initial Exploration
The home page was designed to create a strong first impression while quickly communicating the brand’s positioning. A full-width visual hero combined with minimal text establishes a premium, design-led tone, allowing the work itself to take center stage without overwhelming users with information.
The layout follows a clear, section-based flow that guides users from brand introduction to project exploration, editorial content, and eventually inquiry. By prioritizing large imagery, generous spacing, and simple navigation, the design encourages users to explore the portfolio while maintaining clarity and ease of navigation.
Project Exploration & Storytelling
Presenting Work Through Visual Clarity and Narrative Flow
The portfolio experience was designed to prioritize visual impact while maintaining clarity in how projects are explored. The listing page uses a grid-based layout with large, high-quality imagery and minimal text, allowing users to quickly scan and navigate through projects without distraction. This approach emphasizes the craftsmanship and detail of each project, encouraging users to explore further through visual cues rather than heavy descriptions.
At the project level, the experience shifts from browsing to storytelling. Each detail page is structured to guide users through the project using a narrative flow, combining immersive imagery with concise supporting text. The layout balances whitespace and content to create rhythm, allowing each section to breathe while maintaining continuity. By keeping the structure consistent and the interface minimal, the design reinforces credibility and ensures the focus remains on the work itself.
Editorial Content & Insights
Extending the Experience Through Narrative and Thoughtful Content
The Stories section was designed to complement the portfolio by introducing a more editorial layer to the website. While the portfolio focuses on showcasing completed work, Stories provides space to communicate the thinking, context, and inspiration behind the brand. The listing page uses a clean, grid-based layout that balances imagery and text, making it easy to browse while maintaining a refined and cohesive visual style.
At the article level, the design shifts toward a more content-driven experience. Layouts are structured for readability, with clear hierarchy, generous spacing, and a balance between text and supporting visuals. This approach allows longer-form content to remain engaging without overwhelming the user, while reinforcing the brand’s credibility through deeper storytelling and insight.
Brand & Context
Communicating Identity, Philosophy, and Credibility
The About page was designed to provide context around Lighthouse Hospitality’s work while reinforcing its premium and professional positioning. Rather than presenting dense information, the layout focuses on clear and concise content, allowing users to quickly understand what the company does, how it approaches design, and the thinking behind its work.
The design balances structured text with supporting visuals to maintain engagement while ensuring readability. Strong typography and clean layouts create a sense of clarity and refinement, while imagery reinforces the brand’s identity. This approach helps build trust and credibility without overwhelming users, supporting a more confident and cohesive brand presence.
Client Inquiry & Conversion
Creating a Clear and Frictionless Path to Engagement
The contact page was designed to translate user interest into action by removing unnecessary friction from the inquiry process. The layout is intentionally minimal, focusing on a straightforward form and essential information to ensure users can quickly understand how to get in touch without distraction.
By keeping the interface simple and the flow direct, the design encourages immediate action after users explore the portfolio and content. This clarity reinforces the overall experience—guiding users from discovery to inquiry—while supporting the business goal of converting interest into potential client engagement.
Impact & Results
The website was successfully launched, providing Lighthouse Hospitality with its first dedicated online presence. The final design was approved with minimal revisions, reflecting strong alignment with the client’s expectations and brand direction from the outset.
While no quantitative metrics were available, the project established a clear foundation for how the company presents itself digitally. The new website introduced a structured way to showcase projects, improved storytelling through both portfolio and editorial content, and strengthened the overall brand presence—enabling Lighthouse Hospitality to communicate its work more effectively and engage potential clients with greater clarity.
Reflection & Key Learnings
This project highlighted the challenge of translating a loosely defined brief into a clear and structured digital experience. With limited content, tight timelines, and minimal initial direction, the process required making deliberate decisions around structure, hierarchy, and presentation early on. Balancing design quality with practical constraints—particularly WordPress implementation—also reinforced the importance of designing with feasibility in mind.
It also emphasized the value of ownership in shaping both the experience and visual direction. From defining layouts to establishing a cohesive brand presence, the project strengthened my ability to turn ambiguity into clarity, while ensuring the final output remains both visually compelling and functionally effective.
