Brand Context

Willow & Fern Wellness Spa is a conceptual wellness brand created to explore how a modern spa experience can be expressed through a calm and intentional visual identity. Positioned within the wellness and hospitality space, the brand focuses on creating an environment that encourages rest, balance, and a slower pace.

In a market often defined by either overly minimal or overly luxurious aesthetics, Willow & Fern aims to find a middle ground — combining natural elements, warmth, and simplicity to create a brand that feels both refined and approachable.

Project Overview

This project focused on creating a complete brand identity system for Willow & Fern Wellness Spa, with the goal of translating a calm and immersive spa experience into a cohesive visual language. The work covered key elements of branding including logo design, color system, typography, tone of voice, imagery direction, and overall layout composition.

Developed as part of a design fundamentals course, the project explored both core design principles and the use of AI-assisted tools to support ideation and visual development. The outcome is a structured and cohesive brand guideline, supported by a series of applications that demonstrate how the identity can be consistently applied across different touchpoints.

My Role & Responsibilities

I worked on this project as the primary designer, leading the development of the brand identity from concept to final output while following a structured course framework. The process involved translating design fundamentals into a cohesive system that reflects the intended tone and experience of the brand.

Key responsibilities:

  • Developing the overall brand concept and visual direction

  • Designing the logo system and defining its variations and usage

  • Building the color palette and structured color system

  • Establishing typography and layout principles

  • Defining tone of voice and imagery direction

  • Creating brand applications across print, digital, and environmental touchpoints

  • Using AI-assisted tools to support ideation and visual development

Design Challenge

The goal of this project was to define a clear and intentional direction for the Willow & Fern brand, focusing on how design can shape a calm and immersive experience. This involved addressing both visual and strategic challenges to ensure the identity feels distinct, balanced, and cohesive across all touchpoints.

Market Context

The wellness and hospitality space is highly saturated, with many brands leaning toward either overly minimal or overly luxurious aesthetics. This often results in identities that feel generic or disconnected from the intended experience. The challenge was to create a brand that feels distinctive while still aligning with the expectations of a calm and refined spa environment.

Translating Emotion into Design

A key challenge was translating the abstract feeling of calm into a visual language. This required exploring how color, typography, imagery, and layout could work together to create a sense of relaxation and balance in a way that feels intentional rather than decorative.

Balancing Simplicity and Warmth

Maintaining a balance between minimalism and warmth was critical. The design needed to avoid feeling too plain while also not becoming overly styled or complex. Every element had to feel considered, contributing to a soft and inviting overall experience.

Building a Cohesive System

Beyond individual elements, the identity needed to function as a complete system. Ensuring consistency across different touchpoints — from logo usage to applications — was essential in creating a unified and scalable brand.

Design Goals & Principles

The design approach for Willow & Fern focused on creating a calm, intentional, and cohesive brand identity that can be applied consistently across different touchpoints. The goal was not only to define how the brand looks, but also to establish a clear set of principles that guide design decisions and ensure the experience remains balanced and refined.

Clarity in Visual Identity

Create a visual language that feels calm and cohesive, using simple and well-considered elements that communicate the brand clearly without unnecessary complexity.

System Over Individual Elements

Develop a structured and scalable brand system where each component — from logo to color and typography — works together as part of a unified whole rather than isolated pieces.

Consistency Across Touchpoints

Ensure that the identity remains consistent across all applications, maintaining a recognizable and cohesive experience whether in print, digital, or environmental use.

Balance Between Minimalism and Warmth

Strike a balance between simplicity and warmth, avoiding visuals that feel too plain while ensuring the design remains soft, natural, and inviting.

Emotion Translated into Design

Translate the feeling of calm into a clear visual language through thoughtful use of color, spacing, typography, and imagery, ensuring the experience feels intentional rather than decorative.

Exploration of Tools and Workflow

Incorporate modern tools and AI-assisted workflows to support ideation and visual development, while maintaining control over the final design direction and outcomes.

Design Process

The design process combined structured design thinking with AI-assisted workflows to explore and build the Willow & Fern brand identity. AI supported early ideation and variation, helping expand creative directions efficiently.

The process moved from research and concept exploration to system development and application, with final decisions guided by design principles to ensure a cohesive and intentional outcome.

Design Brief & Research

The process began with developing a design brief to define the target audience, brand positioning, objectives, and overall direction. This included understanding the wellness industry and reviewing competitors. AI tools were used to support brainstorming and research, helping structure ideas and explore early directions.

With this foundation in place, the next step focused on building the visual direction through moodboards, drawing inspiration from tropical wellness environments and the natural scenery of Bali. Elements of Balinese culture were also considered to inform the direction, with a focus on how color, lighting, materials, and composition can create a calm and immersive experience.

Exploration & Concepts

With a clear visual direction established, the process moved into exploring logo concepts and visual approaches. This stage focused on translating natural elements into a simple and recognizable identity, experimenting with shapes, symbolism, levels of detail, and overall composition.

A wide range of variations were generated, with AI playing a key role in producing and testing different directions quickly. This allowed for rapid exploration and comparison before refining the ideas into a more focused visual direction. The outcome of this stage was a clear and refined concept that formed the foundation of the overall brand system.

System Development

With a refined concept in place, the process moved into developing a structured visual system by refining the logo, color palette, typography, and layout together. The focus was on creating visual harmony while ensuring each element works as part of a cohesive and scalable identity.

Core components such as color usage, typography, layout principles, and visual hierarchy were defined and tested across different applications. AI tools played a key role in accelerating exploration and refinement, allowing for quick iteration, while final decisions were guided by design principles to maintain clarity, consistency, and balance.

Refinement & Application

The final stage focused on refining the visual system and applying it across key brand touchpoints. This included polishing design details and translating the identity into a complete brand guideline supported by a set of mockups.

Applications such as print materials and product packaging were developed to demonstrate real-world use, helping validate the flexibility and consistency of the system. AI tools continued to support this stage through mockup generation and visual exploration, while final outputs were refined to ensure alignment with the overall brand direction.

Design Solution

The final outcome is a complete and cohesive brand identity system for Willow & Fern Wellness Spa, designed to translate a calm and immersive experience into a clear visual language. The system brings together key elements including the logo, color palette, typography, imagery, and applications, ensuring consistency across all touchpoints.

Tone of Voice

A calm and intentional way of communicating

The tone of voice was designed to reflect the calm and intentional nature of the brand, shaping how Willow & Fern communicates across different touchpoints. It ensures the brand feels approachable, clear, and consistent while reinforcing a sense of ease and refinement.

Logo

A balanced mark inspired by nature and simplicity

The Willow & Fern logo combines a botanical symbol with a refined wordmark to express a sense of calm, balance, and quiet elegance. Designed to be both distinctive and versatile, it forms the foundation of the brand’s visual identity across different applications.

Color

A palette inspired by nature, warmth, and balance

The color palette is inspired by natural landscapes and the warmth of sunlight, combining soft greens, earthy tones, and gentle highlights to create a calm and grounded visual experience. Designed to feel balanced and cohesive, the palette reflects the quiet atmosphere of tropical environments.

Typography

Balancing clarity and elegance through type

The typography system balances elegance and clarity, combining a refined serif for headlines with a clean sans-serif for body text. This pairing creates a visual tone that feels both sophisticated and approachable while maintaining readability across different applications.

Imagery

Creating a calm and immersive visual atmosphere

The imagery direction focuses on creating a calm and immersive experience rooted in nature. It emphasizes natural light, organic environments, and quiet, unforced moments to reflect a sense of ease, warmth, and subtle refinement across the brand.

Brand Application

Bringing the brand to life across touchpoints

The Willow & Fern brand comes to life through consistent application across different touchpoints. Each example demonstrates how the visual system works together to create a calm, refined, and immersive experience.

Outcome

The project resulted in a complete and cohesive brand identity system, combining logo, color, typography, imagery, and applications into a unified visual language. Each element was designed to work together consistently, creating a calm, refined, and immersive brand experience across different touchpoints.

It demonstrates the ability to build a structured brand system from concept to application, while integrating AI as part of the design workflow to support exploration and refinement. The final outcome reflects a design approach focused on clarity, consistency, and thoughtful visual decisions.

Reflection & Key Learnings

This project reinforced the importance of building a brand system with structure and intention, rather than focusing on individual visuals. It highlighted how consistency across elements — from logo to applications — plays a key role in creating a cohesive and believable brand experience. Integrating AI into the workflow also became a significant part of the process, enabling faster exploration and iteration while still relying on design judgment to guide final decisions.

At the same time, the project revealed challenges in translating ideas into clear visual outcomes, balancing aesthetics with usability, and using AI meaningfully within the process.
